The Waybacks

The Waybacks are Hungry.

AUSTIN DAZE: What do you guys think about being at Old Settlers?

Warren Hood: We’ve been here many times before and we like it because we like having the Waybacks in Austin and letting all our friends and family here see what we’re off doing all the time. We’ve got a lot of friends that think the Waybacks don’t exist-that we made them up.

James Nash: We like to come to Austin because obviously it’s a beautiful festival and a lot of great people here but we mostly come to Austin for the food. 8 days of queso.

Joe : There is good Mexican food in California but it is totally different. Read the rest of this entry »

Matt the Electrician

[fa:p:a=72157594267830938,id=237019872,j=r,s=s,l=p]AUSTIN DAZE: Is there a story behind your stage name or is your last name Electrician?

MATT THE ELECTRICIAN: It’s kind of a boring story: basically I was an electrician for I guess about seven years here in town professionally. It was the first job that I got when I moved to town, which was in ‘96. It was really long days, like 12 or 14-hour days. I came here because I wanted to play music, so I was trying to do the open mic nights and little gigs at coffee shops and stuff, but because I was also an apprentice to an electrician, I didn’t have a whole lot of say when I got off of work. The guy that I worked for would occasionally let me– if I had gotten a really good gig–he would let me get off a little bit early. But for the most part we would get back to the shop at like 7 or 8 o’clock at night and if I was going to do an open mic that started around then I just had to kind of haul down there as fast as I could. Peter Rowan

[fa:p:a=72157594267830938,id=237019990,j=r,s=s,l=p]AUSTIN DAZE: Many consider you to be a living legend at this point in time. What are your thoughts on that?

PETER ROWAN: Well, you know, just to be living is a legend in my mind. That’s a nice compliment because everybody I worked with was a legend. It doesn’t have any reality, but I’m a storyteller so it makes it fun to be seen that way because that means that I can draw on my background and tell part of the legend. Legendary, Peter Rowan. Alleged, Peter Rowan. It’s helpful in terms of just relating to the audience, because I’m the teller of the tale. I’m telling the legend of the bluegrass life. So, It’s good. Hammel on Trial

[fa:p:a=72157594270496732,id=235357897,j=r,s=s,l=p]AUSTIN DAZE: Tell us about your new CD.

ED HAMELL: Tuesday the 7th of February, on Righteous Babe Records. The name of the CD is, “Songs for Parents who Enjoy Drugs”. You know, obviously inspired by my four- year-old son and maybe the state of the nature. And levity. There is a lot of humor in it because although I’m probably pretty angry, disgruntled, and pessimistic, I try to remain optimistic through humor. I guess that’s the best way to describe it.

AD: This is your second release with Ani Difranco?

[fa:p:a=72157594269325105,id=235359278,j=r,s=s,l=p]AUSTIN DAZE: Tell us about your new CD of children’s music.

TERRI HENDRIX: I had the idea to do this CD for a long time. I’ve played a lot of shows where people bring their kids. I love to write and I had these songs that I had written that didn’t fit on a regular record-they were a little more childlike in nature. Some of the songs were written for if I get nervous before I play–they are little stupid things I say. Like one of them was, “If you get the jitters, be a hitter not a quitter. Step up to the plate and play ball. Even if you’re in a funk, don’t be a little punk, step up to the plate and play ball”. Read the rest of this entry »

The Greencards

the greencardsAUSTIN DAZE: You guys have reached success with The Greencards so quickly and have virtually exploded onto the scene. What was the defining event that changed the Greencards from being an opener and a Sunday brunch band to being a headliner?

EAMON MCLOUGHLIN: That’s a good question. I think the thing that was a big deal for us was the sensation of our first record, Moving On. We released that in November in 2003. You know it was original, it started to get some airplay on KGSR and that was a big deal, to here our music on the radio. That really changed things for us. The amount of exposure really helped.

AD: It seems odd that a band would move away from Austin with their musical career, doesn’t it usually happen the other way around?

Ruthie Foster

[fa:p:a=72157594267830938,id=235323328,j=r,s=s,l=p]How do I put this? You need to go see her play. I went last night and still humming the sweet sounds the next day. She is that good. Here are some words we shared:

AUSTIN DAZE: How did you wind up in Austin?

RUTHIE FOSTER: Who doesn’t wind up in Austin when you are in music or art or any of that? This is the place to be. This is the environment to be in for anything to do with art. I was living, well I was living in so many places, but I was living in College Station for about 7 years after coming back from New York and it just wasn’t as much as a nurturing town. Everything grows here. There is such beautiful music here. I had to come here. Read the rest of this entry »

Warren Hood

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH SEE THE GREAT CHAMP HOOD PLAY WITH TONI PRICE FOR ALMOST FOUR YEARS. I WAS HOOKED WHEN I SAW THE MAGIC THAT THE FOUR PLAYERS TOSSED BACK AND FORTH ON STAGE. THERE WERE NOT MANY TUESDAZE NIGHTS THAT I MISSED DURING THAT TIME. FROM TIME TO TIME, CHAMP WOULD SHIFT THE SPOTLIGHT TO HIS SON, WARREN. WARREN WOULD SIT IN FOR A FEW SONGS AND KNOCK THE CROWD SILENT WITH HIS FIDDLE. IT WAS AMAZING TO SEE THIS MUCH TALENT ON A STAGE. WARREN WAS ONLY IN HIGH SCHOOL AT THE TIME. I BEGAN TO FOLLOW WARREN’S EXPLOITS IN THE DIFFERENT BANDS HE PLAYED WITH. THE SOUTH AUSTIN JUG BAND WAS THE FIRST TIME I SAW HIM PLAY IN HIS OWN BAND. I WAS HOOKED. Read the rest of this entry »
