My Solo Night With “The Soloist” by Rosie Gomez
I arrived a little late to the screening but quickly upon sitting down, became absorbed in the emotional story. Robert Downey Jr. plays Steve Lopez, an LA Times reporter who’s lost his inspiration for writing. But through a chance encounter he meets Nathaniel Ayers, Jr. (Jamie Foxx), a homeless man with an incredible musical talent.
The Soloist touches upon many heart breaking subjects such as homelessness in America today, mental illness, as well as the importance of friendship and family. There is also a phenomenal supporting cast consisting of Catherine Keener, Stephen Root, and my per
sonal favorite, Rachael Harris. I encourage everyone to get off their behinds on Friday and go to the theatre. You just might walk away with a new perspective on the increasingly shoc
king number of homeless Americans and the misconceptions concerning mental illness.
The Soloist opens this Friday, April 24th.

I was just watching this movie, “The Soloist”. I was surprised when Robert Downey Jr forst visits LAMP and has a conversation with a homeless man on the steps. This gentleman use to be a local Austinite that I would see near the campus and the drag area from the 1997 to maybe 2000. I have often wondered what happened to him, and lo and behold, here he is in movies. I am betting he doesnt have a Facebook account, so it saddens me that I will never see him again.
